Not all magnets are created equal. There are a wide range of fridge magnet options including the size, magnet thickness, finish, vinyl and paper options.
The magnet in the above photo is 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″, 22 mil thick with a gloss laminated finish and is holding up 3 sheets of 50lb offset text (similar to copy paper). The sheets are 8 1/2″ x 9 5/8″ in size.
Magnet material is measured in mils which means a millionth of an inch. Most items are not measured in mils so it can be confusing to know how to converts this. For ease, we convert mils to points (pts) as paper card stock can also be measured in points. It is not an exact conversion but very close. Also, the thicker the magnet, the stronger the magnetic power.
Our standard fridge magnets are 28 mil thick (28 pts). For comparison, most business cards are 14 pt thick so our standard magnets are 14 pt thicker. Now, what does that mean. Well it means that our magnets will hold up paper and will not slide down or fall off the fridge. We digital print your artwork in full colour CMYK on paper and then gloss laminate the prints and then mount this to the magnet material and then cut the magnets down to the finished shape and size. The laminate enhances the colors and will also protect the surface from scuffing and scratching. Matte laminate also available.
Our stock shapes include various round, square and rectangle sizes to unique shapes like ribbons and triangles. If you are wanting larger sized magnets, 22 mil thick will work fine as the magnets will be covering a larger portion of the fridge so they will have strong holding power. And yes, we do produce custom shaped magnets.
Other fridge magnet options include 36, 46, 66 and 86 mil magnets. Magnet material is flexible but the thicker you go, the less the magnet will bend. We also produce waterproof magnets, car door/vehicle magnets and magnets for outdoor use.
When enquiring about fridge magnets, take note of the overall thickness and if the magnets have a coating or have a laminated surface. Best bet is to ask for a sample. Some companies are producing 14 pt and 16 pt magnets as well as vinyl magnets. The vinyl fridge magnet options are printed right on the vinyl surface but these magnets are not always laminated so the printed surface can scratch and scuff and the finish is dull. The light weight magnets (14 and 16 pt) will not always hold up a sheet of paper and some will fall off or slide down the fridge.
As for vehicle magnets, 36 mil is the thinness we recommend. Otherwise the magnet will fall off the car when moving.
